As tourists swap traditional sightseeing for exploring foreign supermarket aisles, the Bucket List Company has identified several must-visit destinations and their must-try snacks.

From Japan's unique KitKat flavours to Thailand's beloved 7-Eleven toasties, travellers are embracing "grocery store tourism", looking to local supermarkets for an authentic glimpse into a country's culture and daily life.

According to adventure travel specialists, the Bucket List Company, in Japan, visitors are flocking to chains like Aeon and Seiyu to discover matcha-flavoured KitKats and fresh onigiri rice balls.

Meanwhile, Mexican supermarkets such as Bodega Aurrerá and OXXO are attracting tourists with their exclusive Takis flavours, including Guacamole and Fuego Azul, alongside traditional spicy tamarind sweets.

Italian supermarkets Esselunga and COOP have become unexpected tourist destinations, offering artisanal pasta and baci chocolates at prices significantly lower than tourist shops.

In South Korea, supermarket chain Emart has become a haven for instant noodle enthusiasts, featuring bold flavours like black bean and fire chicken, while regional specialities such as Andong Soju draw curious visitors.

Thailand's supermarket scene, particularly its 7-Eleven stores, has gained significant social media attention, with more than 5,000 Instagram posts tagged "7-Eleven Thailand".

The convenience store chain has become famous for its fresh toasties and ready-to-eat Thai dishes, including pad kra pao and green curry.

Research shows that French and Spanish branches of Carrefour, alongside American Walmart stores, are among the most searched-for supermarkets globally, each generating 1,900 monthly searches. Target in the USA and Thailand's 7-Eleven complete the top five most sought-after retail destinations.

Keither Crockford, CEO of The Bucket List Company, explains the trend's appeal: "Supermarkets offer an unfiltered glimpse into the local palate. It's here you'll find everyday foods that locals love. Plus, shopping for snacks and groceries is a budget-friendly way to bring home edible souvenirs or try a wide variety of flavours without breaking the bank."
